Dartmouth Sailing Delivers Strong Performances Across Three Regattas on Fall Weekend No. Six

Dartmouth sailing turned in a strong fall weekend performance, competing in three regattas and finishing in the top half of each fleet despite unfavorable weather conditions. The Big Green raced at the Open Atlantic Coast Championship hosted by Brown, the Yale Women’s Regatta, and the Oberg Trophy hosted by Northeastern, with most races across the weekend going unfinished due to challenging conditions.

At the Open Atlantic Coast Championship, Dartmouth finished seventh of 18 teams with 181 points across 10 races. The team beat Navy, Charleston, and Harvard, among others, in the overall standings. Roger Williams also finished with 181 points, but Dartmouth claimed seventh on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Chase Decker and Lilly Baker sailed all 10 races in Division B and finished fifth in the division with 71 points. They opened with a win in race one, which placed Dartmouth second overall behind only Yale. They added a third in race five and fourth-place finishes in races two and six. The duo then finished in the top 10 in four of their last five races to hold their division position.

Division A finished 11th with 110 points. Ryan Satterberg and Sage Sakowicz sailed races one through eight, posting fifth- and sixth-place finishes in races four and five. Cooper Keeves and Alexander Donahue took over for races nine and 10 and posted respectable finishes. Dartmouth led Roger Williams for most of the regatta, holding an 18-point advantage after race seven and a one-point edge heading into the final race. A strong finish from Roger Williams pulled the two teams level at 181, but Dartmouth secured the tiebreaker to stay in front.

At the Yale Women’s Regatta, Dartmouth finished eighth of 17 teams with 243 points over 13 races. Charlotte West and Lucia Duffy sailed all 13 races in Division B and finished sixth in the division with 88 points, just three points behind fifth-place Tufts. Their best finishes were third in races two and 12, with a fourth-place finish in race eight and fifth-place finishes in races three and seven. Race six was their only finish outside the top nine. They were consistent across both days, scoring 53 points in Saturday’s first eight races and 35 in Sunday’s last five.

Alders Kulynych-Irvin and Grace Patterson sailed every race in Division A, finishing 15th with 155 points. On Sunday, they scored 48 points over five races and then closed the regatta with a second-place finish in race 13, the best Division A result of the weekend.

At the Oberg Trophy, hosted by Northeastern, Dartmouth placed sixth of 17 teams with 43 points. Only three races were completed, all on Saturday. Sunday brought almost no wind, and none of the attempted races could be finished. Dartmouth finished one point behind Boston University for fifth and two points ahead of Vermont in seventh.

Dartmouth’s Division C boat finished third with 14 points, behind only Rhode Island and Salve Regina, which tied at 10 points. The boat opened with a third-place finish in race one, took eighth in race two, and closed the day with another third in race three. Those two third-place finishes accounted for most of the team’s edge in the standings. The Division B boat finished with 29 points, tied with Northwestern for 10th in the division. It started with a 12th in race one, then moved up to 10th in race two and seventh in race three, its best finish of the regatta.

Looking ahead, Dartmouth will host the Urn Trophy on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1, and will also compete at the Schell Trophy hosted by MIT and the Nickerson Trophy hosted by Tufts the same weekend.
