Bowdoin College sailing had a productive weekend competing in two regattas, securing an eighth-place finish at the U.S. Naval Academy to earn a coveted berth in the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Finals. The Polar Bears also hosted the Hewitt Trophy in Harpswell, placing eighth among 18 teams as they push through a demanding fall schedule.
At the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1 held at Navy, ten races were completed over the weekend. Sunday’s conditions tested sailors with light breezes and soaking rain. Michelangelo Vecchio and Elizabeth Wire competed in A Division, while Rebecca Schill and Hazel Johnson represented the Polar Bears in B Division. Owen Benison, Lucca Antonietti, Ryan Keenan, and Maizie Bartlett served as reserves. The eighth-place result was enough to punch Bowdoin’s ticket to the Open ACC Finals, scheduled for October 24-25 at Brown University.
Back on home waters at the Hewitt Trophy in Harpswell, the Polar Bears navigated a variety of course locations and changing conditions across a two-day event that saw 14 races completed in each division. Henry Ladd, Noah Reischmann, and Yasmine Nee competed in A Division, while Shea McGrath and Posie Cabaniss represented Bowdoin in B Division. The eighth-place finish among a competitive 18-team fleet demonstrated solid depth across the roster.
Looking ahead, the Polar Bears return to the water for another packed weekend featuring three events on the schedule: the Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth, the Savin Hill Invitational at Boston College, and the Women’s Atlantic Coast Championship Finals at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. With their ACC Finals berth already secured, Bowdoin will look to build momentum heading into the most important stretch of the fall campaign.
