Four Hobart Statesmen Set to Contest Carl Van Duyne Trophy in Annapolis

Four Hobart sailors are heading to the Carl Van Duyne Trophy this weekend, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Men’s Singlehanded Championship, held Oct. 3-4 in Annapolis, Maryland. Seniors Jack Carter and TJ Allison, junior Dante Garcia, and first-year Nicholas Crull will represent the Statesmen at the prestigious conference regatta.

The quartet earned their spots based on strong performances at the ILCA North, the opening event of the season. Crull made a stunning collegiate debut by winning the regatta outright, accumulating just 20 points across the weekend. Carter secured sixth place, while Allison and Garcia finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Carter brings significant championship experience, making his fourth trip to the conference singlehanded regatta. His best result came last year when he placed 10th. Garcia will be competing at the Carl Van Duyne for the third time, and Allison qualified for the second consecutive year.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges have recent pedigree in this event. Nick Session ’24 captured the Carl Van Duyne Trophy for HWS in 2023, giving the program a benchmark the current roster will be eager to match or surpass.

Eighteen sailors from eight schools are set to contest the conference crown in Annapolis. The stakes are high, as the first-place finisher earns the league’s automatic bid to the ICSA Men’s Singlehanded Championship.

It will be a busy weekend across the HWS sailing program. The Statesmen are also competing at the Danmark Trophy in New London, Connecticut, while William Smith sailors travel to Hanover, New Hampshire, for the ACC Eliminations.
