HWS Sailing Set to Compete at MAISA Fall Championships on Two Fronts

Hobart and William Smith Sailing will compete at the MAISA Fall Championships this weekend, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, with squads racing at two conference championship regattas simultaneously. William Smith hosts the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Fall Championship at Bozzuto Boathouse on Seneca Lake, while the coed team travels to Annapolis, Maryland, for the War Memorial, the MAISA coed dinghy fall championship.

The MAISA Fall Women’s Championship gets underway Saturday at 11 a.m. William Smith will welcome Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Princeton, SUNY Maritime, St. Mary’s (Md.), Merchant Marine, Navy and Pennsylvania to Seneca Lake. At last year’s edition, the Herons placed seventh overall with 201 points. Sabrina Starck and Olivia Wilkins were strong in A Division, finishing third with 74 points, while Moira Padilla Velasquez, Dagny Kruger and Bennett O’Keefe placed 10th in B Division with 127 points. Georgetown is the reigning champion.

The War Memorial regatta, serving as the MAISA coed dinghy fall championship, also begins Saturday at 11 a.m. HWS will face a deep field including Christopher Newport, Fordham, George Washington, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Penn State, Princeton, Queen’s, RIT, St. Mary’s (Md.), SUNY Maritime, Merchant Marine, Navy, Pennsylvania, Virginia Tech, Washington College, and Webb Institute. The Statesmen and Herons last won the War Memorial in 2018.

At last year’s War Memorial Regatta, HWS finished third with 79 points. Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones ’26 and Valyn Mogensen ’26 tied for third in A Division with St. Mary’s College (Md.) and recorded top-10 finishes in seven of eight races. JJ Klempen and Stella Kim placed fourth in B Division, missing the podium by just a single point. St. Mary’s (Md.) won the regatta.

Both events offer the Herons and Statesmen a chance to make their mark heading into the latter stages of the fall season, with the home-water advantage at Seneca Lake adding extra motivation for the women’s squad.
