The 2027 World Sailing Championships head to Gdynia, Poland, from July 22 to August 1, 2027, when the Baltic port city will host the world’s best two-person Olympic crews in a regatta that also serves as the first major qualifier for the LA 2028 Olympic Games. For sailors in the 49er, 49erFX, 470 and Nacra 17, there is no bigger event on the calendar between now and Los Angeles.
Beyond the world titles themselves, the first Olympic nation quota spots for LA 2028 will be awarded on the Gulf of Gdańsk. That raises the stakes well beyond medals: for many crews, a strong result in Gdynia is what secures their country a ticket to the Games and keeps their campaign alive.
A World Championship Split Across Two Continents
For the first time, World Sailing is running its flagship championship as a split-venue event. All 10 Olympic sailing disciplines will race in 2027, along with Para Inclusive events, but they will be divided between two host cities. Fortaleza, Brazil, opens the championships from January 15 to 23, 2027, before the action moves north to Poland in the summer.
Gdynia will stage the two-person events: the Men’s Skiff (49er), Women’s Skiff (49erFX), Mixed Dinghy (470) and Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17), along with the Para Inclusive events. That makes it the venue for some of the fastest and most visually spectacular racing in Olympic sailing.
Why Gdynia
Founded in the 1920s, Gdynia has grown into a modern seaport and is widely regarded as the capital of Polish sailing. The championships will be folded into the city’s annual Gdynia Sailing Days festival and timed to coincide with its centenary celebrations, giving the regatta a strong local festival atmosphere.
The event is organized by the Polish Yachting Association in partnership with Poland’s Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the regional government of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the City of Gdynia. Polish organizers have described it as the largest sailing event ever held in the country, and they see it as part of a broader push toward a future Polish Olympic bid.
Two Test Events Have Set the Stage
Gdynia has already given the Olympic fleet two looks at its race area. The first test event in July 2025 doubled as a final tune-up before the 2025 World Championships in Cagliari and was used to trial a new medal series format. A second test event, held July 14 to 19, 2026 during Gdynia Sailing Days, focused on the 49er and 49erFX fleets and delivered good racing conditions on the Gulf of Gdańsk.
World Sailing also used the 2026 test event as an operational dress rehearsal, trying out its technology partners, a new event website and the Olympic Data Feed that will power results and coverage in 2027.
The Crews to Watch
The 2026 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Quiberon, France, produced three first-time world champions, and all of them will arrive in Gdynia with targets on their backs.
In the 49erFX, Norway’s Pia Dahl Andersen and Nora Edland won the title on a tiebreak, taking the final race to edge out 2025 world champions Paula Barceló and Maria Cantero of Spain. In the 49er, New Zealand’s young pairing of Menzies and George Lee Rush survived a nervy final race to hold off Austria’s Keanu Prettner and Jakob Flachberger and the Dutch three-time world champions Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken. In the Nacra 17, Italy’s Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei finally claimed a world title after 12 years of sailing together, ahead of France’s Tim Mourniac and Aloise Retornaz and Britain’s John Gimson and Anna Burnet.
The home crowd will have a genuine medal hope of its own. Poland’s Aleksandra Melzacka and Sandra Jankowiak climbed from eighth to bronze on the final day in Quiberon, and they will be racing on familiar Baltic water with the host nation behind them.
A Packed Year for Elite Sailing
Gdynia lands in the middle of one of the busiest seasons the sport has ever seen. The Ocean Race starts in Alicante, Spain, in January 2027 and finishes in Amaala, Saudi Arabia, in June. The America’s Cup will be contested in Naples in July, overlapping with the Gdynia championships, and SailGP will run throughout the year. Several of the sport’s top professionals came up through the 49er and Nacra 17 pipelines, which will make the summer calendar especially interesting to follow.
