US Sailing Issues Apology Over Software Error Affecting Newport Bermuda Race Scoring

US Sailing has released a formal statement addressing a Newport Bermuda Race scoring issue that disrupted corrected-time calculations during the 2026 edition of the prestigious offshore classic. The organization offered a sincere apology for its role in what it described as a complex and multifaceted situation that affected competitors, race officials, and the wider sailing community.

The problem originated from an error in routing software used to generate the fleet’s forecasted Time Correction Factors, commonly known as TCFs. Once the issue came to light, race organizers, technical officials, and scoring personnel collaborated with US Sailing to verify the error and produce updated corrected-time calculations.

US Sailing also acknowledged the International Jury’s decision to reinstate the original results in accordance with the governing race documents, a ruling that has drawn considerable attention across the offshore racing world.

According to the statement, US Sailing worked proactively from the moment the issue was identified, engaging the software provider, rating authorities, and race officials to understand the root cause, validate corrected calculations, and provide ongoing support throughout the process.

The organization noted that the use of TCFs is still relatively new in offshore racing. Moving forward, US Sailing pledged to work closely with the software provider, rating authorities, race organizers, and other stakeholders to review the incident thoroughly, strengthen validation processes, and implement measures to help prevent similar issues in future events.

US Sailing reaffirmed its commitment to supporting race organizers with reliable technology, transparent processes, and fair competition standards.

In an update issued on Friday, June 26, at 1130, US Sailing indicated that the situation remains evolving. The organization confirmed it is developing a white paper that will provide additional information, which is expected to be shared the following week.
