The 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta is set to kick off the European Olympic sailing season in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, with more than 40 US sailors ready to compete. The fleet heading to Spain includes Olympians, established pairings, and several exciting new debuts from American teams and athletes.
Running from March 30 through April 4, the regatta serves as the official European season opener, bringing together all 10 Olympic classes on the waters of Palma de Mallorca. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant early-season events on the international sailing calendar.
Molly Vandemoer, Director of Olympic Sailing, emphasized the importance of the event. “The Princess Sofia regatta is always a great kickoff event for the spring season in Europe,” she said. “It is an important stop for our athletes, as the first chance for them to qualify for a higher Performance Pathway tier, which determines their funding and team status.”
Vandemoer also highlighted the value of having the full US contingent gathered in one location. “With so many US athletes all in one place, it’s a great chance for the US Sailing staff to get facetime with sailors and coaches before the 2026 season really kicks off,” she added.
The regatta represents a crucial checkpoint for American sailors looking to advance within the Performance Pathway system. Results in Palma can directly influence funding allocations and official team status heading into the heart of the 2026 competitive season. With a strong American presence on the start line, the 55th edition of this storied event promises plenty of compelling racing from the US fleet.
