St Helena Cup Delivers Saturday Drama on Moreton Bay

The St Helena Cup turned on a proper Queensland weather switch for its Saturday racing, with a forecast of light airs giving way to building breeze and full spinnaker conditions across Moreton Bay. This footage, posted by St Helena Cup TV, captures the opening day of what is now a 51-year-old fixture on the South East Queensland calendar, drawing 88 boats and more than 500 sailors from across the region and into Northern New South Wales.

Hosted by Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, the regatta’s Saturday leg set up the tactical battles that would carry through to Sunday’s finale. Viewers can watch the full St Helena Cup Saturday racing to see the fleet working the shifts under sunshine and sharpening breeze, a reminder of how quickly conditions on the bay can shift from forecast to reality — something regular Moreton Bay sailors know all too well.

The St Helena Cup Fleet in Action

Across three divisions — monohull PHS, trailer sailer and cruising classes, plus multihulls — crews spent Saturday jockeying for position ahead of Sunday’s title-deciding racing. The St Helena Cup’s Division 1 teams event, contested for the event’s headline trophy, eventually went to Concerto, Evolution and Shorty, while Trex claimed the Division 1 Individual IRC honours. Division 2 and Division 3 crews, including Cover to Cover and the Intrigue/Ritalin multihull pairing, were likewise building toward strong results that would only be confirmed once Sunday’s breeze properly filled in.

Camaraderie Behind the Competition

What stands out in this Saturday footage is less about trophies and more about the scale of participation — close to 90 boats sharing the same patch of water, trimming for puffs and lifts in classic teams-racing style. It’s a different flavour of competition to the Olympic-class intensity covered recently in our look at the San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta, but the same hunger for clean starts and tactical gains runs through both. For anyone tracking grassroots keelboat racing in Queensland, the St Helena Cup remains essential viewing.
