The waters off Newport, Rhode Island shimmered in August sunshine as the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) captured its fourth consecutive Hinman Masters Team Race title. Hosted at the Club’s historic Harbour Court, the regatta once again underscored NYYC’s mastery of tactical sailing, teamwork, and composure under pressure.
The Hinman Masters is unlike most regattas: a team-racing format sailed in Sonars with strict age limits—skippers must be at least 45, crews at least 40. That balance of seasoned strategy and refined skill sets the tone for a weekend that is as much about experience and resilience as it is about raw speed. This year’s edition, held from August 8 to 10, 2025, drew competitive teams from across the United States, each eager to challenge the NYYC’s streak and claim the storied Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Invitational Trophy.
A Championship Built on Consistency
NYYC’s hold on the Hinman Masters Team Race has deepened each year since their 2022 victory. By 2024, they had secured a third consecutive title. That victory laid the foundation for this year’s campaign, where they once again showcased not just speed, but a clear ability to anticipate opponents’ moves in the chess-like format of team racing.
The regatta’s nature means races are short and unforgiving, with as many as 25 over the course of a weekend. Every start and mark rounding is critical. “The key is composure in the chaos,” one past competitor said, and NYYC’s crew demonstrated exactly that in 2025.
Weather, Rhythm, and Tactical Flow
The 2025 edition of the regatta began with postcard conditions. The crisp skies and steady early breezes offered a perfect opening stage, setting the tone for what would become a fiercely fought series.
By the final day, a social media update from NYYC Regattas described the shift in atmosphere: “A warm and sunny start of the day brought an afternoon sea breeze—it provided perfect sailing conditions.” That sea breeze proved decisive. As boats accelerated into tight mark-rounding duels, NYYC’s depth of experience shone through. Their crews executed textbook maneuvers that not only secured top finishes but also disrupted rival teams just enough to cement their lead.
As the final scores were tallied after a weekend of fierce competition off Newport, the standings reflected a clear stratification of performance across all eight vying teams. The New York Yacht Club – Levesque team emerged victorious, building on their dominant 17–4 record in the round robins and ultimately sweeping the final in the championship match. In a strong showing, Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.) secured second place after prevailing in a close semifinal against Eastport Yacht Club (Md.), who took third. Following the top three, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) held fourth on the leaderboard, while New York Yacht Club – Leonard claimed fifth. Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans, La.) and St. Petersburg (Fla.) Yacht Club rounded out the middle positions, finishing sixth and seventh respectively, based on their round-robin performance. Anchoring the field was Annapolis (Md.) Yacht Club, which completed the regatta in eighth place.
Rivalries and Respect on the Water
While NYYC grabbed the headlines, the regatta was also defined by rivalries and respect among clubs. The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, a frequent contender, posted their own congratulations on Facebook: “Congrats to Team SCYC for a strong comeback and 4th-place finish in the Hinman Masters Team Race!” That acknowledgement underscored the competitive depth of the event—many teams left Newport with pride in their performances, even if they fell short of the title.
This camaraderie is central to the Hinman Masters. Though fiercely contested, the regatta has become as much a gathering of sailing’s elder statesmen as it is a championship. After racing, crews shared stories on the Harbour Court lawn, their laughter and post-race debriefs echoing across the historic clubhouse that has witnessed countless sailing milestones.
Four in a Row: What It Means
Winning once is impressive; winning four times in succession is historic. NYYC’s triumph speaks to the club’s depth of talent and their ability to cultivate a team ethos that thrives under the unique pressures of masters-level team racing. Their seamanship is only part of the story—the real hallmark of this streak is their ability to adapt, race after race, to the shifting dynamics of wind, tide, and competition.
Looking Ahead
With four consecutive Hinman Masters titles in their trophy case, the New York Yacht Club has etched its name into the history of this prestigious regatta. But the victory also raises the stakes: rivals will arrive in 2026 even more determined to break the streak. For now, though, the champagne toasts on the Harbour Court lawn belong to the victors.
The 2025 Hinman Masters will be remembered not only for NYYC’s continued dominance but also for the vibrant sailing conditions, the respect among competitors, and the way the regatta once again celebrated the enduring spirit of masters sailing.
