Chicago Yacht Club Kicks Off Junior Sailing Season with 2026 MISSA Icebreaker Regatta

Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station welcomed the return of competitive junior sailing over the first weekend of April, hosting the 2026 MISSA Icebreaker Regatta. The two-day event marked the official start of the club’s junior sailing season and signaled the beginning of another year of interscholastic racing on the Great Lakes.

A Chilly Tradition on Lake Michigan

The MISSA Icebreaker Regatta is one of the earliest events on the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association calendar, living up to its name by putting young sailors on the water while spring temperatures still carry the bite of a Great Lakes winter. Held on Saturday and Sunday, the regatta drew high school sailing teams from across the region eager to shake off months of offseason rust and test themselves in early-season conditions.

Lake Michigan in early April is rarely forgiving. Water temperatures typically hover in the low 40s, and air temperatures can swing dramatically over the course of a single race day. For junior sailors, the Icebreaker serves as both a competitive proving ground and a harsh but effective reintroduction to on-the-water racing after the long winter layoff.

Belmont Station Takes Center Stage

Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station, situated on the lakefront in the heart of the city, provided the venue for the weekend’s racing. The station has long served as a hub for the club’s youth and junior sailing programs and is well suited to hosting fleet-style interscholastic regattas. Its location offers a range of racing conditions depending on wind direction, with the Chicago skyline providing a dramatic backdrop for competitors and spectators alike.

The club has invested heavily in its junior program over the years, and hosting marquee MISSA events like the Icebreaker underscores its commitment to developing the next generation of competitive sailors in the Midwest.

MISSA and the Growth of High School Sailing

The Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association is one of the largest and most active interscholastic sailing organizations in the country, encompassing high school sailing teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and beyond. MISSA operates under the umbrella of the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) and sends qualifiers to national championship events each year.

The Icebreaker Regatta plays an important role in the MISSA season. As the first major event of the spring, it sets the tone for conference and district racing that follows, and gives teams an early read on where they stand relative to their competition. For seniors, it is the beginning of a final push toward qualifying regattas and national berths. For younger sailors, it represents a first taste of high-level interscholastic fleet racing.

Looking Ahead

With the 2026 season now officially underway, Chicago Yacht Club and the broader MISSA community will turn their attention to a packed spring schedule. Teams will compete in a series of invitational and qualifying regattas across the Great Lakes region, building toward conference championships and ultimately the ISSA national events later in the year.

For Chicago Yacht Club, the successful hosting of the Icebreaker is just the opening chapter of what promises to be an active season at Belmont Station. The club’s junior sailors are back on the water — and the racing has begun.
