The Melges 24 World Championship 2026 is fast approaching, drawing competitors from across North America and Europe to Little Traverse Bay in Harbor Springs, Michigan, for one of the most prestigious titles in international one-design sailing. With preparations accelerating, the stage is set for a spectacular week of racing this September.
Hosted by Little Traverse Yacht Club, this edition marks the 27th Melges 24 World Championship since the inaugural event was held in Torquay, England, in 1998. Over nearly three decades, the regatta has evolved into far more than the International Melges 24 Class Association‘s premier event. It has become an annual celebration of excellence, where world titles, perpetual trophies, and longstanding traditions honor achievement across every level of competition.
Sustained success at this level has proven remarkably difficult. Across twenty-six world championships, only four sailors have captured the title more than once. Just two, Carlo Fracassoli and Lorenzo Bressani, have won three World Championships each, while only Vince Brun and Bressani have successfully defended the title in consecutive years. Those statistics underscore why the Melges 24 Worlds remains one of the most coveted trophies in one-design sailing. Winning demands months of preparation, exceptional teamwork, meticulous boat handling, and the ability to perform consistently in one of the deepest and most competitive fleets anywhere. History has shown that even the greatest sailors rarely win twice, making every victory and every successful title defense a truly extraordinary achievement.
While only one team will ultimately be crowned Melges 24 World Champion, the event offers far more than a single trophy. Throughout the week, competitors will vie for a distinguished collection of perpetual awards. Alongside the Open and Corinthian World Championship titles, awarded with the perpetual Melges Performance Sailboats Trophy and The Challenge Henri Samuel Corinthian World Trophy along with World Championship medals from the IM24CA, teams will pursue honors including the Zerogradinord Next-Gen Trophy, the Zarko Draganic Trophy, the newly introduced Meier Trophy, and the prestigious Quantum Great Lakes Cup. Together, these awards reflect the values that define the Melges 24 Class and ensure that every team arriving in Harbor Springs has meaningful goals to chase.
An outstanding international fleet is taking shape for the event, scheduled for September 19-26. Currently, 38 teams from Canada, Great Britain, and the United States are preparing to compete alongside former champions, accomplished Corinthian sailors, and emerging crews, each striving to make their mark in the Melges 24 history books.
Little Traverse Bay promises to serve as a first-class venue for the occasion. Renowned for its pristine freshwater conditions, tactical racing opportunities, and spectacular late-summer sailing, Harbor Springs has earned a reputation as one of North America’s most dynamic racing locations. On August 29-30, the Melges 24 Pre-Worlds Regatta will offer competitors the ideal chance to experience the racecourse, fine-tune their setups, and make final adjustments before the main event. Happening almost exactly one month in advance on August 14-16, 2026, the Melges 24 U.S. National Championship features nearly 40 teams on the starting line, a strong indicator that things are getting serious in the Melges 24 fleet. Then Pre-Worlds, and then onto Worlds. Clearly the heat is on.
This September, Harbor Springs will provide the stage for another memorable chapter in Melges 24 history. One team will leave as World Champion, while many others will add their names to the class’s growing legacy through performances that celebrate excellence, perseverance, sportsmanship, and achievement. Those enduring traditions are what continue to make this championship one of the most respected and sought-after titles in one-design sailing.
The 2026 Melges 24 World Championship is supported by a growing list of sponsors including Great Lakes Sports Commission, Little Traverse Yacht Club, Irish Boat Shop, Nubs Nob, Quantum Sails, Arntson Marine, Running Water Club, Melges Performance Sailboats, and Little Traverse Yacht Club Corinthian Foundation. Most recently, Gill Marine was named the official partner of the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship. Beginning in August, sailors will have the opportunity to purchase exclusive 2026 Melges 24 World Championship-branded apparel and merchandise, with new limited-edition releases arriving weekly in the lead-up to the event.
The championship will be hosted by Little Traverse Yacht Club in cooperation with the International Melges 24 Class Association and the US Melges 24 Class Association. The reigning Melges 24 World Champion is Peter Karrie aboard NEFELI GER673, who won the 2025 title with crew members Alessandro Franci, Niccolò Bianchi, Saverio Cigliano, and Karlo Hmeljak, supported by coach Simon Sivitz Kosuta.
