Match Race Mondays Return to St. Francis Yacht Club for Third Season Under Kate Shiber

St. Francis Yacht Club is gearing up for another season of competitive match racing training on San Francisco’s iconic Cityfront, as Match Race Mondays returns for its third consecutive year. Led by accomplished match racer Kate Shiber, the weekly program offers sailors of all experience levels a chance to develop one of the most demanding skill sets in competitive sailing.

“I’m very excited to return to our hallowed Cityfront battleground for another year of dial ups, dial downs and everything in between,” Shiber said ahead of the 2026 season launch.

A Proving Ground on the Cityfront

The program takes place every Monday from 5:00 PM to sunset, utilizing the club’s fleet of J/22s — a boat class that has long served as a gold-standard platform for match racing development. The J/22’s responsive handling, manageable size, and one-design parity make it ideally suited for the close-quarters pre-start maneuvering and tactical dueling that define match racing.

San Francisco’s Cityfront, the stretch of water between the Marina District and the Bay Bridge, is renowned for its challenging and variable conditions. Strong currents, gusty westerly breeze funneling through the Golden Gate, and short, choppy seas create an environment that accelerates learning and punishes hesitation — exactly the conditions that produce sharp, decisive match racers.

Open Format Lowers the Barrier to Entry

One of the program’s most appealing features is its accessibility. There is no fee and no minimum commitment required to participate. Sailors can drop in on any given Monday, bring friends or teammates, and stay for post-sailing debriefs held either on the dock or at the club bar. StFYC members are eligible to skipper the boats, while non-members are welcome to join as crew — opening the door to a broader community of aspiring match racers across the Bay Area.

While no prior match racing experience is necessary, organizers do ask that all participants have some background racing small keelboats to ensure sessions remain both safe and productive. Additional practice opportunities may also be scheduled in advance of major events, giving participants a chance to ramp up their preparation when it matters most.

Why Match Racing Matters

Match racing remains one of sailing’s most tactically intense disciplines, pitting two boats directly against each other in a test of boat handling, rules knowledge, and psychological warfare. The format has produced some of the sport’s most celebrated competitors and serves as the foundation of prestigious events including the Congressional Cup, the World Match Racing Tour, and historically, the America’s Cup itself.

St. Francis Yacht Club has deep roots in high-level match racing. The club served as the challenger of record for the 33rd America’s Cup through the Golden Gate Yacht Club and has long been a hub for competitive sailing on the West Coast. Programs like Match Race Mondays help sustain that pipeline by giving the next generation of racers regular, structured opportunities to hone their craft in real conditions against real competition.

With two successful seasons already in the books, the program’s return signals strong and growing demand among Bay Area sailors for tactical racing development outside the traditional buoy racing calendar. For those looking to add a competitive edge to their sailing repertoire — or simply experience the thrill of bow-to-bow racing on one of the world’s great sailing venues — Monday evenings on the Cityfront are the place to be.

How to Get Involved

Sailors interested in joining Match Race Mondays can connect directly with St. Francis Yacht Club for details. Whether you are an experienced match racer looking to stay sharp or a keelboat sailor curious about the discipline for the first time, the program welcomes all comers ready to learn and compete.
