The Mallorca Sailing Centre Regatta is set to attract a significant portion of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía fleet to the Bay of Palma this week, with over 300 teams representing 41 nations ready to compete across three days of racing.
Five of the ten classes that will contest the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels from 27 March to 4 April are taking part in this warm-up event, scheduled for 12 to 15 March. The regatta is open to ILCA 6, ILCA 7, Nacra 17, 49er, and 49erFX fleets, with up to nine races planned for each class between 13 and 15 March.
A total of 326 teams have entered, with the ILCA 6 class boasting the largest turnout at 115 boats, nearly 60 of which sail under the Spanish flag. The remaining fleets break down as follows: 69 entries in ILCA 7, 67 in 49er, 51 in 49erFX, and 24 in Nacra 17.
Beyond the overall podium in each class, the 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 categories also serve as a counting event for the 2026 Spanish Cup. Galician siblings Jaime and Martín Wizner return as defending champions in the 49er class, while Canary Islands duo Alicia Fras and Elena Barrio look to retain their 49erFX crown. The Nacra 17 fleet features the Balearic-Cantabrian pairing of Joan Cardona and Nicole Van der Velden, alongside Catalan siblings Daniel and Nora García de la Casa.
Jordi Castro, technical director of the Federación Balear de Vela (Balearic Sailing Federation), highlighted the event’s growing stature. ‘Having more than 40 different nationalities represented confirms the international appeal of the Mallorca Sailing Centre Regatta,’ he said. ‘Many teams and national federations travelling to Mallorca for the Sofía incorporate this regatta into their Olympic preparation programmes, and the fact that it counts toward the Spanish Cup in three classes provides additional motivation for Spanish crews.’
The regatta is organised jointly by Club Nàutic Arenal and Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, in partnership with the Real Federación Española de Vela, the Federación Balear de Vela, and the Bahía Activa Foundation.
