A well-known Pacific Northwest sailmaking operation is embarking on an exciting new chapter. Ballard Sails has officially joined the Doyle Sails Group, rebranding as Doyle Sails Seattle while retaining everything that has made the team a trusted name among sailors in the region.
The loft, based primarily at Shilshole Marina with coverage extending from Blaine to Olympia, Washington, will continue to design and build sails in-house under the same leadership and with the same dedication to craftsmanship that local sailors have relied on for over a decade. What changes is the scope of support behind them, as the crew now has access to Doyle Sails’ global design resources and cutting-edge technology.
Founded in February 2010 by Joe Grieser and Alex Simanis, the Seattle loft has spent 15 years earning a stellar reputation for quality workmanship, attentive customer service, and strong performance across both racing and cruising programs. Both founders have deep ties to the local sailing community and bring decades of combined sailmaking expertise, including earlier stints at Lidgard Sails. Their team of skilled sailmakers has become a go-to resource for boat owners throughout the Pacific Northwest.
The move to Doyle Sails Seattle represents expansion rather than disruption. Sailors can count on the same personnel, the same level of service, and the same core values that have defined the loft from the beginning.
Spanning two spacious floors, the facility is outfitted with heavy-duty industrial equipment capable of handling projects ranging from one-design fleet work to Grand Prix racing programs. In a recent demonstration of the loft’s technical prowess, the team constructed a TP52 mainsail entirely in-house, underscoring the scale and sophistication of their operation.
Doyle Sails Seattle offers a comprehensive suite of services including new sail design and construction, annual maintenance programs, repairs, recuts, and full race support. The loft has also contributed to offshore campaigns such as the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, proving its capacity to manage demanding international projects. A full-service rigging shop rounds out the offering, with wire swaging and cold head rod capabilities available on site.
Joe contributes valuable cruising insight drawn from experience with his Farr 1220 family cruiser, ensuring practical and effective solutions for passage makers and performance cruisers alike. Alex remains heavily engaged in competitive sailing, bringing Pacific Cup experience aboard his custom 27-footer Pell Mell, active one-design racing within the Moore 24 fleet, and plans to crew for a Transpacific campaign in 2027.
Seattle’s thriving racing scene, which includes robust J/24, Moore 24, and J/70 fleets, keeps the loft closely connected to sailors competing at every level of the sport.
