2026 470 European Championships: 53 Teams Compete in Vilamoura

The excitement is building in Vilamoura, Portugal, as fifty-three teams representing 20 nations prepare to contest the 2026 470 European Championships. Following two days of registration and boat measurements, the fleet is primed for action when racing gets underway on Monday.

A total of 106 athletes have confirmed their spots at this year’s European Championship. Six demanding days of competition lie ahead, divided into three distinct phases. A qualification series comprising five races comes first, followed by a seven-race final series. The championship will reach its climax on Saturday, March 14, when two medal races determine the ultimate standings.

With registration, measurements, and the opening ceremony now complete, anticipation is steadily rising throughout the boat park.

“This week, we have the best teams of the class coming. Things are getting serious for these LA28 campaigns. The committee’s level is very high. We expect to have a very good event,” says Dimitris Dimou, the 470 class representative.

Sailors had a valuable warm-up opportunity last weekend at the Vilamoura Grand Prix, where more than 20 crews tested the venue and familiarized themselves with the race course. Portuguese pair Beatriz Gago and Rodolfo Pires claimed the Grand Prix trophy.

The starting line features an impressive mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent. Among the front-runners are defending European champions Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, who also took silver and bronze at the 2025 Europeans. British pair Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, along with France’s Matisse Pacaud and Lucie De Gennes, are also expected to challenge for the podium.

“We feel confident. We have worked hard this season and improved quite a lot compared to last season. Obviously, it will be a long week, but ready to fight,” Xammar said on Saturday afternoon in the boat park. “It’s important to have knowledge, strategy, and methodology to be able to understand what’s going on, what pattern you are sailing at, so it’s gonna be an interesting week.”

Robust contingents from France, Great Britain, Germany, and Italy round out a competitive European fleet that blends experience with fresh faces. The younger generation is well represented too, with top Junior World and European Championship crews featuring on the entry list.

The battle extends well beyond Europe’s borders. Teams from Australia, the United States, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea have all registered. Four young Australian crews are among the entries, and for the first time, two crews are competing as neutral athletes.

The highest-finishing European crew will earn the title of “470 Class Mixed European Champion.” Additionally, the overall winner of the championship will receive the prestigious “470 Kevin Burnham Trophy,” awarded by the International 470 Class Association.

The trophy honors the legacy of Kevin Burnham, a three-time Olympic sailor and two-time Olympic medalist who competed for Team USA. Burnham captured gold at the Athens 2004 Games alongside Paul Foerster and previously earned silver at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics, where he sailed with Morgan Reeser.

For those wanting to follow the action remotely, all official Race Committee communications and results will be posted on the Online Notice Board via the event website. Live tracking will also be available, with details and links to be shared soon. Daily press releases will appear on the official 470 website, while photos can be found on the 470 Flickr page.
