Ferrari and Dubbini Seize Early Lead at 2026 470 European Championships in Vilamoura

The 2026 470 European Championships kicked off in Vilamoura, Portugal, on March 9 with a compelling opening day that featured three hard-fought races across shifting conditions. When the dust settled, Italy’s Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini had claimed the top spot on the leaderboard thanks to a masterclass in consistency.

The day began under light, gusty winds that tested the fleet’s patience and tactical awareness. The Race Committee raised the O flag following the first upwind leg, signaling the challenging nature of the breeze. Portuguese crews made their presence felt early, with Diogo Costa and Carolina João sailing to a convincing victory in the white fleet’s opening race, while compatriots Beatriz Gago and Rodolfo Pires crossed the line in third.

Conditions shifted dramatically for the second race as the wind filled in to over 15 knots. The white fleet completed their contests swiftly, but the blue fleet was forced to wait. Ahead of the third start, a significant wind shift from the right prompted the Race Committee to reconfigure the course.

“We started the third race, but after the first upwind, there was a big cloud on the right, and the wind shifted about 40 degrees. The Race Committee decided to abandon the race, which, in my opinion, was a good decision. After that, we had a very exciting third race in strong winds,” explained Ferrari.

Ferrari and Dubbini posted an impressive 2-1-3 scoreline across the three races to take the overall lead. Close behind in second are British duo Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, who earned silver at the 2025 European Championships and showed steady improvement throughout the day. France’s Matisse Pacaud and Lucie De Gennes round out the top three.

“Today was a very good day for us. We managed the wind shifts well and focused a lot on pressure, and it worked out well for us,” Ferrari reflected on their performance.

Dubbini added a note on their strategic approach: “We tried to focus on our own sailing and our feelings on the water, without paying too much attention to the others, since it was only the first day of the championships.”

Racing continues on Tuesday with two races on the schedule. The first warning signal is set for 12:00 local time, with live tracking available for those following the action from afar.
