The 420 Class Development Programme in Portorož delivered another action-packed day as conditions intensified on Day 2, with gusts reaching up to 30 knots. Despite the stronger winds, interest in the programme only grew, with sailors and families flocking to the event to learn more about the exciting double-handed dinghy class.
The popular “Have a Go” activity continued to draw impressive numbers. Many sailors stopped by to try the trapeze for the first time, while several who had their initial experience on Day 1 returned to build confidence and develop their skills further. The hands-on format clearly resonated with the young competitors, encouraging repeat participation.
Parent engagement also stepped up on the second day. Mothers and fathers took the opportunity to speak with the class coach, gaining valuable insight into the pathway into the 420, the physical and tactical demands of the class, and the opportunities it offers young sailors looking to progress in the sport.
The consistent turnout across the first two days highlights the strong curiosity and enthusiasm surrounding the 420, particularly among sailors approaching the end of their Optimist careers. With energy levels high and conditions testing, the development programme is proving to be a compelling introduction to the next chapter of competitive sailing.
